Blue Mountains Private Day Tour
Sandstone Valleys, Ancient Forest & Lookouts Beyond the Three Sisters
An hour and a half west of Sydney, the Blue Mountains open into a landscape of sandstone cliffs, deep forested valleys and ancient eucalyptus forests. Beyond the Three Sisters lie quiet escarpment tracks, waterfalls & freshwater pools, hanging swamps, wind‑eroded caves, volcano remnants and views across valleys that stretch to the horizon.
This is a fully private tour, designed to suit how you want to experience the mountains. Whether you prefer a relaxed sightseeing day, a mix of lookouts and short walks, or a longer hike into the landscape, your guide shapes the itinerary around your interests, fitness and pace.
Vantage Points
The major lookouts are spread across the mountains and most involve little or no walking. Echo Point looks directly across to the Three Sisters, Mt Solitary and Narrow Neck Plateau. Govetts Leap takes in the full sweep of the Grose Valley to Bridal Veil Falls and Mt Hay. Wentworth Falls overlooks steep sandstone escarpments and a deep forested valley. Quieter stops like Boars Head, Cahill's, Evans and Anvil Lookouts see far fewer visitors and offer equally striking views across the Megalong and Grose Valleys.
Walks
Walking is always optional and always sized to your group. Short bushland trails of around 45 minutes reach rewarding escarpment views. Longer routes go through hanging swamps, sandstone formations and deep forested valleys. For experienced walkers, longer trails of up to 4 hours reach remote cliff lines and dramatic ridgelines including Fortress Ridge.
Further Into the Mountains
The glow worm tunnel is a disused railway tunnel near Lithgow where bioluminescent glow worms light the walls in the dark -- found only in Australia and New Zealand. The Zig Zag Railway is a heritage steam train running on selected days each month. Both feature on the Past the Mountains day plan.
Sightseeing Day
Lookouts, villages and valley views - the highlights at a relaxed pace
Wentworth Falls and the sandstone cliffs above the valley. Coffee in Leura Village. Scenic World - the descent railway to the rainforest floor and cable car views across the Jamison Valley. Echo Point for the Three Sisters and Mt Solitary. Then the quieter lookouts: Boars Head and Cahill's across the Megalong Valley, Evans and Anvil looking out over the Grose.
Bushwalking and Lookouts
For visitors who want to hike and get properly into the landscape.
The day takes in the major lookouts - Wentworth Falls, Echo Point and Govetts Leap - with a short stop in Leura Village along the way. The centrepiece is a bushwalk tailored to your fitness and how much time you want to spend on the trail: 45 minutes, one-two hours or three and a half to four hours. The longer walks pass through some remarkable country - hanging swamps, massive sandstone cliffs and deep forested valleys. Greg talks through the landscape, native plants and wildlife as you go.
Past the Valleys
For guests who want something different.
Echo Point and Boars Head lookout in the morning for incredible valley views, then Govetts Leap for the sweep across the Grose Valley to Bridal Veil Falls and Mt Hay. The afternoon heads further into the mountains to the glow worm tunnel -- a historic railway tunnel where bioluminescent glow worms light the walls in the dark, a phenomenon found only in Australia and New Zealand. On the return journey, there’s a good chance of spotting wild kangaroos and wallabies in the bush.
Optional: Scenic World
The Scenic Railway, Skyway and Cableway at Katoomba let you see the Jamison Valley from below -- including a walk through rainforest on the valley floor via the world's steepest incline railway.
