Kiama Private Day Tour from Sydney

Sea Cliff Bridge, the Kiama Blowhole and the Illawarra escarpment south of Sydney

South of Sydney past Wollongong, the coastline shifts to volcanic headlands, sea cliffs and uncrowded beaches. This ten-hour private tour takes in the Kiama Blowhole, the basalt columns of Bombo Headland, Sea Cliff Bridge and the Royal National Park, finishing with the option of Symbio Wildlife Park on the way back to the city.

This is a private tour (1 to 4 people) shaped around how you want to spend the day. Walking is adjusted to suit your group.

The Route

The day starts by driving south to Kiama. On the way we have a short stop at Sublime Point lookout which provides 180 degree views of the coastline.

Upon reaching Kiama we stop at several places in this area:

Kiama Blowhole Ocean water surges into a volcanic chamber and compresses the air above it — on a solid swell the blowhole shoots seawater up to 25 metres into the air. One of the most powerful blowholes in the world. The Little Blowhole is a short drive away and has a narrower chamber resulting in a more explosive stream of ocean water.

Bombo Headland The headland is formed from basalt columns — hexagonal rock formations created by cooling lava flows millions of years ago. The geology here is unlike anything else on the Sydney coastline.

After a walk to see the basalt columns we stop at Bombo Beach and enjoy uninterrupted views of the beach whilst enjoying a tasty picnic lunch.

Cathedral Rocks and Minnamurra Dramatic sea cliff formations along the Kiama coastline. At Minnamurra the river flows into the sea creating a unique sand spit often covered by a large numbers of birds, and yet another striking volcanic formation is close by, Stack Island.

It is now time to head north along the coast and we usually make the stops listed below, although the itinerary can be varied if you would like to spend more time at the beach (often tempting in Summer) or visit Symbio Wildlife Park.

Sea Cliff Bridge A cantilevered bridge that curves around the cliff face above the Pacific Ocean on Lawrence Hargrave Drive. The bridge is 665 metres long and sits 40 metres above the ocean. Views of the rock platforms and escarpment from the walkway alongside are outstanding. If you feel like a coffee there is an optional stop at a nearby hotel, The Imperial at Clifton.

Bald Hill Lookout One of the finest coastal lookouts in New South Wales, above Stanwell Tops. Hang gliders and paragliders launch from the clifftop. The sweeping views stretch south along the Illawarra Escarpment towards Port Kembla.

Royal National Park The afternoon moves into the Royal National Park — options include Wattamolla waterfall and lagoon, a coastal walk, or quieter beaches and rock platforms within the park.

We cover a lot of ground on this tour with a few different itinerary options. We will see some wonderful coastal scenery, including the remarkable Kiama blowholes.

A great tour to get a feel for the coastline south of Sydney!

Price (based on group size) 1-2 persons $1150 3-4 persons $1250

Greg suggested other ideas to ensure that we didn't waste any of the day. We got the most out of the Blowholes and cliffs. The photos Greg took came out much better than some of the ones on my phone and also meant that I could take in the scenery more.

The trip continued to Bald Hill Lookout where the view was beautiful and then a walk along the iconic Sea Cliff Bridge. The trip concluded with a memorable rainforest walk and a visit to the scenic Wattamolla picnic area. Many memories made.

Greg was informative and knowledgeable about the area and was mindful of our fitness levels. It was beautifully quiet and serene in the forest and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Optional: Symbio Wildlife Park

Symbio is one of the best places near Sydney to see Australian wildlife up close - koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, quokkas, echidnas, dingoes, emus, cassowaries and a wide range of native birdlife. The enclosures are open and natural, and the experience feels relaxed and personal.
A visit typically takes 75–90 minutes, if you prefer to not visit Symbio, we use that time to explore quieter beaches, rock platforms and coastal lookouts within the park.

How far is Kiama from Sydney?
About 1.5 hours south by road. Greg picks you up at 9am and the drive down passes through the Royal National Park and along the Illawarra Escarpment — the scenery changes significantly as you head south of Wollongong.
How does the Kiama Blowhole work?
Ocean swells push water into a volcanic chamber in the headland. As the water compresses the air above it, the pressure forces a jet of seawater up through a hole in the rock — up to 25 metres high on a solid swell. The size of the blowhole depends entirely on the swell and wind direction on the day.
What are the basalt columns at Bombo Headland?
Bombo Headland is formed from hexagonal basalt columns created by cooling lava flows millions of years ago. The columns are stacked vertically along the cliff face and are unlike anything else on the Sydney coastline. The headland is a protected geological site.
Can we visit Symbio Wildlife Park?
Yes. Symbio sits just outside the Royal National Park on the return to Sydney and can be included as an optional extra. Entry is approximately $45 per adult, paid on the day. Let Greg know before the tour if you'd like to include it.
How much walking is involved?
Walking is adjusted to suit your group. The main walks are around the Kiama headlands (easy, around 30 minutes), the Sea Cliff Bridge walkway (easy, flat), and options within the Royal National Park in the afternoon. All are optional and can be shortened or skipped.
Where does the tour start and finish?
Greg picks you up from your Sydney accommodation or cruise terminal at 9am. The tour returns you to your accommodation at the end of the day, usually around 7pm.
Is the tour suitable for children?
Yes. Children of all ages are welcome and child and infant safety seats are available on request. The Kiama Blowhole and Bombo Headland are particularly engaging for younger guests.
How many people are on the tour?
Your group only. Fully private, no other guests. Maximum 4 guests.
What happens if the weather is bad?
The tour generally runs in all weather — a rough swell actually makes the Kiama Blowhole more spectacular. If conditions are forecast to be genuinely unpleasant, you have the option to reschedule or cancel. A final call can be made on the morning of the tour.
What should we bring?
Comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen and a hat. Snacks and water are provided throughout the day. The south coast can be windy — a light jacket is worth bringing year round.
